Overview
This is a wiki page for documenting and tracking issues with the map. Issues include anything having to do with the map itself, functionality problems, and feature requests. If you have spotted a problem with the map please check this page first. If it is not here please add it - just click edit above to make changes to this page. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR VALUABLE INPUT! I only wish I could keep up with the reports as fast as you are able to put them in.Due to some spamming you must be registered to edit.
NEW!: To solve some reported issues we're going to enhance each station stop with expanded information. This will take the form of wiki pages that anyone can contribute station information to. This project has been initiated, for more information see Subway Map Station Details Project. We also have another new project, Subway Map Translations Project which is for improving translations of the map in other languages.
If you would like to leave a comment about the map please post to this discussion thread.

02 Oct 2009 B, Q, N, D trains Routing Between Dekalb Ave and.Pacific Street/Atlantic ave:
The routing has the lines (looking north from Pacific Street/ Atlantic Ave) going up Ashland Pl and rejoining with Flatbush ave via Dekalb Ave, when they use Fulton Street to get back to Flatbush Ave.
19 Aug 2009 Map shows W train stopping at Court St-Borough Hall and Atlantic Ave-Pacific St. The W train doesn't go into Brooklyn.
Also, map does not reflect the recent G train extension to Church Ave (G now stops at 9th St-4th Ave, 7th Ave, 15th St, Ft Hamilton Pkwy and Church Ave). Mechanical engineering degree
4 Febr 2009 Map labels around 40th st and 5th av
As the previous comment mentions the CUNY Graduate School and University Center label is not located correctly, moreover at that place is the monumental New York Public Library building.
Also: at the SE corner of 40th/5th is the mid-manhattan branch of the public library and as far as I know not the "Wodd Tobe-Coburn School"
31 May 2008
The CUNY Graduate School and University Center is listed as being located at 42nd & 5th Ave. That is the old location. The CUNY Graduate Center is now located at 365 5th Ave (between 34th & 35th St.). Is there any way to update this on the map?
28 Dec 2007 | PATH | issue: PATH trains between Journal Square and Grove St stations actually travel on a more direct, diagonal route, through an open cut located between Elizabeth St and Alan Terrace. The route currently shown on the map overlay is not in service.Online Policing degree
Issue: Station Details Errors
14 May 2008 | Aqueduct Racetrack station | the north-bound only station at Aqueduct is missing, and it seems the North Conduit station is in its place. The line "splits" in two on the real map to show the racetrack station being north only, not for Conduit.
4 Apr 2008 | Christopher St station | stairs on uptown side should be in the traffic island to the left of current location which is the park
5 Feb 2008 | 163rd St. & Amsterdam / St. Nicholas Ave station, all three of the stairs at 163rd St. are closed. The only way to exit/enter is via 162nd St.
14 Jan 2008 | F East Broadway | dots in the middle zooms could use a little re-aligning - put dots right on east broadway
11 Dec 2007 | Willets Pt in QN dot on all zooms do not match closest zoom - need to move them
11 Dec 2007 | Steinway St in Queens (GRV trains) dots need alignment see closest zoom for problem. ADDITIONAL PROBLEM Stairs at the Steinway St. station are not shown correctly. The station does not extend all the way to Broadway, as shown on your map. The northernmost stairs are between Broadway and 34th Ave.
10 Dec 2007 | 72nd St. 1,2,3 trains doesn't show any stairs. | NEED MORE INFO: True what you say about no staircases. We used the MTA maps as a reference, so this is all we know. If there are staircases missing somehow you all will have to tell us where they are. We will edit the art if provided with the information, but where you see stations you are seeing as much as we know from looking at the MTA's maps. ORIGINAL POSTER: What MTA maps are you referring to that show the location of station entrances? Are these available online? (The only ones I know are the neighborhood maps posted in some subways stations, but I didn't think they were publically available.) As far as 72nd St. goes, there are two traffic islands in the middle of Broadway, each one with two entrances, one at each end of the island, for a total of 4 station entrances. Two entrances are on 72nd St., one on the north side, and one on the south side. The southernmost station entrance is between 71st and 72nd sts, and the northern most station entrance is between 72nd st and 73rd st. If my description is hard to understand, the easiest way to check it out is to look at Google satellite images of the area. You can clearly see the two "buildings" that are entrances to the subway. They're the two small buildings in the middle of Broadway at 72nd St. Let me know if you don't know what I'm talking about here. | ONNYTURF: yes, the neighborhood maps, see Help Map Subway Entrances and Exits. I dont recall the orientation of the stairs in those buildings. I'll have to get up there sometime, I'm about 20 blocks south. note to all the best thing in this kind of essay is to email a sketch showing the orientation of the stairs if you know them. Thanks. ORIGINAL POSTER: Wow, that's amazing that you got photos of all the maps and compiled this site from those. Very cool. I'd gladly sketch the stairs for you. How can I upload or email you the picture? | ONNYTURF indeed. uh, oops, i removed my email address from the project page, its back in now. you can email imagery to will@onnyturf.com - thanks! QUESTION: Can you see the orientation from Google Maps Street View? That should give you a pretty good sense here. Let me know.Legal Studies degree
2 Dec 2007 | 155th St. C Train station | The 153rd Street entrance is, sadly, long closed. The stairways shown at 153rd Street need to be removed.
22 Mar 2007 | 72nd St. B & C | Entrance at 70th St. & CPW (SW corner) is omitted. | NEED MORE INFO Confirm orientation of stairwell - north-south or east-west? Original poster It is east-west. MORE INFO: This entrance runs East-West. If you are walking DOWN the stairs, you are walking EAST. Original poster Thanks, it's almost perfect. The stairs on there now are north-south though.
18 Oct 2006 | Herald Square | missing exit onto the west side of 6th just north of 35th | NEED MORE INFO: what is the orientation of the staircase? is north-south on the northwest corner of 6th? or is east-west on 35th just west of 6th?
Closed Issues
21 Jan 2007 | F East Broadway | station details popup not aligned with station "dot" or station outline | FIXED7 Oct 2007 | 50th St C/E stop is southbound only, as stated by the MTA map. onNYturf users may head to or get off at this station looking to catch an uptown C/E, which does not stop at this location. | TODO we need to devise a way to add a note on stations like this and add additional meta data.UPDATE FROM OTHER USERI think you are mistaken. I believe this station provides both uptown and downtown service. However it is only wheelchair accessible in the southbound direction. | ONNYTURF: This stop services both directions, however there is no transfer underground like with Used Cars Los Angeles. | Not An Error this is a ui problem that is now fixable with station details. This info can be added to a station detail page for the station. Custom essay
16 Dec 2007 | Some requests to ?address= will cause xml traversing errors on the server. Need to do better job checking the search results structure when parsing it. | FIXED sorry about that, that's cleaned up now and even excepts requests like places of interest.
20 Dec 2007 | Downtown Bleeker St-Lafayette St | station should not be listed as providing S train service. | FIXED
UPDATED 10 Dec 2007 | 28 Feb 2007 | Canal St. Q, N | Entrance on Lafayette/Centre St. by the 6 and JMZ, but map shows it on Broadway. Note: The MTA map has this same error and I have emailed them but they neglected to fix it, however, the entrance to the Q and N at Canal is by the 6 and JMZ, NOT at Broadway (where the RW are).
TOUGH CALL This isn't really a problem. It's more about how fine grained do you want to get with the detail. All these lines are accessible via the underground tunnels, so there is no single entrance for access. It is more convenient to get to the QN from the easter entrances, its true. That said, there are already 3 dots on the map for the various lines, and right now a fourth I think would just add more confusion. We list all lines on all three dots. At the closest zoom it is possible to see that there is a eastern platform. I will add in (Q)(N) icons at that zoom along that line to note the branching. REPLY: I hear what you're saying, although I still think an extra dot is useful (the first time I wanted to go to the QN trains at this station I walked all the way west (above ground), only to have walk back east (below ground) becaise I looked at a map and it looked like the QN were at Broadway. Even if you still disagree, at full zoom the map should still show the QN trains branching north of the Canal street station. As it is currently, it looks like they stop at Broadway AND at Centre st. because they branch off AT the station. In actuality they branch off between the Prince St. station and the Canal St. station. | ONNYTURF: I'll look at where I placed the line icons again - I think showing them generally as is on the closest zoom might be the best compromise here, and I can add all four united north of the canal station. I don't want to pull the icons off the three dots since you can transfer. Another idea is I can add additional text - like a wike page for each station that you could explode into view on the map which could contain tips for navigating each station.ORIGINAL POSTER: That would be a good idea. | ONNYTURF: im closing this out since I think we've covered everything and more info text across all stops is going to be the solution. 12 Jun 2007 | Lorimer St. / Metroplotian Ave L & G | Entrance at Union Ave and Metropolitan Ave (NE, SE & SW corners) is shown about 2 block South of where it actually is. R2 Fix:: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007. We got the original location from Straphangers who locates the station between Devoe and Ainslie. Google also locates it there, however Google first got its station information from onNYTurf and may have also looked at Straphangers. Further research online suggests that southern entrance has been closed. Would be nice to have this confirmed here, but we think its right now.
18 Oct 2006 | 1 181st Station | the station image needs to be shifted uptown: station exits should be onto St. Nick b/w 181st and 182nd, and onto St. Nick just south of 181st | R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
18 Oct 2006 | 1 191st Station | long tunnel should extend to exit onto Broadway | R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
14 Jan 2007 | 2/3 96 St. Station | The south entrances are between 93rd and 94th Sts. The north entrances are b/w 95th and 96th Sts. There are 2 stairs on either side of Broadway at each entrance. | R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
3 Mar 2007 | Court St-Borough Hall | caption of 4/5 end of station missing "2/3/M/R" information; transfer "tunnel" disappears on extreme close-up; placement of "tunnel" deceptive, as underground transfer is at Joralemon St. where 2/3 and 4/5 physically meet, not under Court St. | R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
30 Aug 2007 | The zoom and navigation for the map disappears when you search a specific address so you cannot zoom in. Actually, these tools are now missing entirely, even if you do not make a specific search. This seems to only be an issue for IE. FIrefox works fine. | R2 Fix: The next major update of the map will have custom zoom controls - TODO confirm new controls work in IE after search.
23 March 2007 | Lic - Court Square is at wrong street - stop is at 44th Dr one block south of where it is now. Orange and Blue lines follow 44th Dr not 44th Rd | R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
19 Nov | R/W Cortlandt St Stop | Is this stop still closed? According to mta.info it is. If so, should it be grayed out on the map to be in accord with the 1 train Cortlandt St stop | R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
4 Dec 2006 | J Chauncey St. Station | There is no dot for this station, though there is a mouse-over, it is on Chauncey St. b/w Broadway and Rockaway Ave. Both the dot and mouse-over should be at Broadway/Chauncey. | ADMIN NOTE: The roll over has been moved the correct position, but the artwork needs updating. R2 Fix: The artwork is updated in the base art for the next major update - will be applied before end of 2007
25 Oct. 2007 | Address glitches in the search function. You type in addresses hoping to find a location in Manhattan and get results in Brooklyn. "24 State Street, New York or NYC, NY" puts you at 24 State in Brooklyn. Same with "33 Gold Street, New York or NYC, NY". There could be others. The 18th-century city planners should have realized New York and Brooklyn would merge one day! | ADMIN NOTE: This is Yahoo's fault. Out of the blue they started defaulting nyc, ny searches to Brooklyn. This is true even on maps.yahoo.com. Going to explore switching to Google geocoding and hopefully this will fix things. | FIXED: We switched to Google which is better.
UPDATE 10 Dec 2007 | 28 Feb 2007 | Miscellaneous | Some stations show the main entrance and others show only an alternate entrance (and not the main entrance). For example, the 6 at 33rd St. only shows the 32nd St. entrance, even though the main entrance is at 33rd St. | NEED MORE INFO: The 6 station at 33rd shows 5 staircases at 33rd and 4 staircases at 32nd. So what is missing? please be specific with staircase orientation (north-south, east-west), street (park ave, 33rd, 32nd) and corner (NE, NW, SE, SW). REPLY: It looks like this issue has been resolved. I think the dot used to be at 32nd St. instead of 33rd St. but it is correct now.
31 Aug 2007 | Mosholu Pkwy Station | On 2 closest zoom levels Mosholu Pkwy road name changes to Gunhill Road Pkwy. This should be corrected. | NOT OUR FAULT: This is Tele Atlas's issue.
18 Oct 2006 | A 190th Station | long tunnel should extend to exit onto Bennett
SEEMS FINE - R2 Update: The tunnel already ends at Bennet Ave. We nudged the edge a quarter of a centimeter to make it even closer, but this seems like a negligible difference to us.
7 Nov 2006 | Outer boroughs | There are no station maps for any of the outer boroughs as far as I can see. There used to be a list of images had & images required, but the link is dead.
FIXED: The page of station map details has been renamed to http://www.onnyturf.com/wiki/index.php?page=Subway+Entrance+and+Exit+Image+List so that the link now works. Station details for outer stations are a work in progress.
10 Nov 2006 | PATH | Station info is missing for PATH stations. Links to port authority web site all reach 404 error.
FIXED: Path icons now link to service advisories on Path website. Path website does not have line specific pages like the MTA.
20 Oct 2006 | 1 Chambers St | 1 train stops at Chambers, only 2 & 3 are shown on map - the 1 train doesn't stop at "Chambers - Park Place", only "Chambers - West Broadway".
FIXED: 1 icon added to Chambers - Westbroadway, 1 icon removed from Chambers - Park Place
19 Nov | A/C/E stop at Franklin Street | This stop is at the intersection of Walker St. and Ave. of the Americas.
NOT A PROBLEM: There is no Franklin Street stop on the A/C/E lines. There is a Franklin Street Stop on the 1 line, and it is properly located at all zooms. The closest stop on the A/C/E lines to Franklin St is the Canel station and it is properly located at all zooms, including indications of station exits near Walker street at the closest zoom.
14 Nov 2006 | A in Queens near the Rockaways | Either the Aqueduct station or the Aqueduct Racetrack station is missing.
NOT A PROBLEM: The MTA name of the station in question is Aqueduct-North Conduit Avenue, which is on the map at all zooms. It is located just North of the Howard Beach junction to the JFK AirTrain
20 Nov 2006| ACBD 145th Street Station | Traffic arrow on W 144th Street, Between Bradhurts Ave and Frederick Douglass Blvd, Should point towards Bradhurts Ave.
NOT OUR PROBLEM: If this is an error, then it is Google's map providor's, complaits like this should be sent to Google.
27 Nov 2006 | unable to save a favorite after doing a "Plot It!"
SORT OF FIXED: I think I patched this problem, but might have created another bug. Digging into the new problems is on the list.
28 Nov 2006 | The "Stillwell Ave" station is labeled "F, Q, D" but the N also stops there.
FIXED: Great catch, Stillwell is the end of the N line. It has been added.
18 Feb 2007 | minor line color errors - particularly on 6th and near Brighton Beach
FIXED: | tile art patched
19 Feb 2007 | R/W | line is discolored in Lower Manhattan on default zoom
NOT A PROBLEM: | lines are yellow at all zooms
22 Mar 2007 | Bowery Station J, M and Z | Mouseover shows J and M only, omits Z.
FIXED: | Z added
27 Feb 2007 | Dwntn Bleecker Lafayette | station popup shows "S" at this station.
FIXED: | S removed
Feature Requests
Request: Please indicate which stairs can be used for which direction. Some stairs only offer access to one direction, while some offer access to both. Maybe include 3 colors with a key (one for both directions, one for uptown, and one for downtown) for the stairs. | ONNYTURF: I think we might solve some of this confusion with station navigation notes for each stop.REPLY: Interesting. Looking forward to seeing how this looks on the interface.Teaching learning degree Hosting
Request: Please indicate the times that stairs are closed, possibly use a different color for part time stairs, indicating which are for exit only and which have agents and what times and what times they are open. | ONNYTURF: when we get the directions system going we'll have a much more robust geospacial database to take advantage off and we can pursue the community inputing this information then. | REPLY: Sounds cool.
Request: Please put entrance/exit diagrams for the PATH stations. I don't think the Port Authority has any, so someone would probably have to make them. | ONNYTURF: If anyone wants to draw where they are and email them to me do so - we'll add them in gladly! hosting
Request: Indicate which door on which car on the train to get off (in both directions) for transfer points and to use various exits. For example, for the 96th St. exit on the 123, indicate that on Uptown trains the stairs are on the 1st door of the 3rd car and the 3rd door of the 1st car. I know this is time-consuming, but if someone gets around to it it would be a really cool feature. | ONNYTURF: You people are crazy! | REPLY: I hope this request didn't come off as insane. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this site and how awesome I think it is, not just that you put it up, but that you take the time to maintain it and make improvements. I'm honestly just trying to give whatever input I can to make it as good as it can possibly be. I've dreamed about a central source for this information (including a guide to which door of the train to get off), and it would just be amazing if we could have the community input this information and add it to a popup bubble for each station or something. Just curious, are you guys native New Yorkers? What part of the city are you from/currently live in? What made you decide to create this site? | ONNYTURF: I was just kidding, I very much enjoy and very very much appreciate all the enthusiasm and help the community puts in. Best door on best car for time of day however is crazy :) I built the map because one, it seemed like an awesomely obvious thing to do, and two, to promote my civil rights articles in hopes that Christine Quinn will never ever ever ever be elected Mayor. Actually I had hoped to contribute to keeping Bloomberg get a second term, but that sadly was a lost cause. :(. I know I'm in the %30 minority. :( ORIGINAL POSTER: Didn't he get a second term? What do you mean it was a lost cause? The best door has nothing to do with time of day, it's just which door for which stairs. Maybe we can add this to the metadata you're putting on the map with the times trains run, etc.
Request: Some sort of an application that can be easily used on mobile phones, especially Blackberries and the iPhone. | ONNYTURF: its on the list
Request: If you look at the MTA map, trains have different routes and make different stops at different times of day. The station popups should show which trains stop there, and what times those trains stop there. For example, the 79th St. and Broadway station in Manhattan only shows the 1 train, even though the 2 also stops there between midnight and 6 AM. (The 1 stops there at all times.) Alternatively, the Fulton St. station lists the JMZ trains as stopping there, even though these trains do not stop there on weekends. Certain trains also do not run after certain times, such as the 3 and V trains. | ONNYTURF: we are slowly but surely working on a directions service, which contains all the time tables. I think it will be easiest to get this kind of complexity from that. It is a serious issue.
Here's a thought: The metadata you're currently adding with all the station details is a great addition. However, it's rather cumbersome to try to figure out what trains run where during what times of day by reading all the metadata. Here's what I'm thinking: keep the metadata there so people can see the big picture at each station. In addition, though, add a popup menu at the top with a bunch of times to select (e.g. "Weekday Late nights (midnight to 6:30 AM)") and have a different map for each time the user can select. Would just be a few changes for each time period and would make it much easier to navigate and see the big picture AT a particular time. I'm happy to help out with this if you can give me a rough idea of how to make changes to the actual map portion of the site.
Things To Reconsider
UPDATE 10 Dec 2007 | 28 Feb 2007 | Grand Central S | Entrance on Madison, NOT Park | REPLY: I posted this before the full zoom showed all the entrances. They are all there at full zoom now. However, zoom out a bit and the dot for the S is at Lexington, when the station is really at Madison/Park. Would be clearer with a dot and then a tunnel showing the ability to walk to Lexington. | ONNYTURF: fare enough. however I've considered Grand Central 4,5,6,S as One Station since this is the customary way the MTA refers to it. Generally I don't like to deviate too much from the MTA so that the map maintains the symbiosis. I'm reluctant to create a unique point for the S entrance at the further out zooms at this point. I will review the MTA map to make sure I am right about what I am saying about it being a unified dot. ORIGINAL POSTER: I believe you are right about the MTA using only one dot for the station. | ONNYTURF: I'm going to move this to a new section for Things to Reconsider. Right now I'm going to leave it as is, as it reflects the MTA map best this way.Educational resources
