The Opportunity Agenda, an advocacy group for things like social justice and health care equality has a new project: HealthCareThatWorks which puts the spotlight on where hospitals are closing in NYC and who it is effecting most. Guess what, yep it turns out they are mostly closing in poor, non-white areas. You can check out the history of hospital closings over the last 20 years using their new map.

Also cool about this map is that the Opportunity Agenda contracted me to develop this map for them! I can not lay claim to the very nice look of the map, but I did all the technical aspects of the map and put together the overlay maps that show areas by ethnic density and poverty density. It was a really great project and I am proud they called me for this.

The State of Health Care in New York

by , Friday Feb 02, 2007 [05:49 PM]
My name is Ronald Towns and I am also a representative of The Opportunity Agenda, the above-mentioned organization that published the Google Maps on disparities in health care access by race and socio-economic status. The data used to produce these maps was also used to write our health care equity report, "Dangerous and Unlawful: Why Our Health Care System Is Failing New York Communities and How to Fix It" http://www.opportunityagenda.org/site/c.mwL5KkN0LvH/b.1405941/k.99A0/Policy_BriefsPublications.htm. Not only does the report provide additional statistical and qualitative evidence that illustrate disparities in access, but it gives a series of policy recommendations for reforming the system. We have polled New York City residents in order to get their views on the state of health care in their communities. The results of that poll can be found at: http://www.opportunityagenda.org/site/c.mwL5KkN0LvH/b.2265563/k.6BFB/Public_Opinion_Research.htm. In the poll, we found that 77% of New Yorkers agree that hospital closures would be bad for New York's health care system. As an organization, we have supported an effort in Central Brooklyn to assess community needs with regards to heatlh care and advocate for a a health care model that works for the community. We have produced a video that demonstrates the health care needs of Central Brooklyn that be watched at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVipv0jZ5rA. Please feel free to offer any advice and/or commentary that you may have.
