Take Manhattan! All Of It!
Stop Hopping and Don't Pass Go! You know you want it, so here it is, the first set of subway map station outlines and exit details featuring ALL of Manhattan!

I have no idea how many stations it is, but it's a lot! Just keep zooming in on the subway map and you will see!
In addition, as foundation for this release, subway line details have been added at another closer zoom for the entire system! It's like being right on the platform, but without the smells. This is as close as you can get without triggering an Elmo alert.
This was a monumental effort both on my part and on the part of people who use and love the map. For the last three weeks, more or less, my little iBook has spent most of its 24hr life processing illustrator art, jamming together photoshop files, and cutting almost 50,000 tiles for this update! And this speaks nothing of the time spent by the small cadre of contributors to the information and artwork itself.
And, this is not the end, but only the beginning of this update! I have received snap shots for several stations outside Manhattan and work on those will begin shortly. The full list of station source images already sent in is here. More station source images are however still needed, so if you feel like helping out, please take a moment to check the list and if your station is not there, grab your camera! I did promise to do the outer stations first, but that was before someone volunteered to do all of Manhattan! I will get to that effort shortly.
A great deal of gratitude is also owed to several people who I only know by their email addresses and sometimes a first name. You are the people who remembered to take your cameras with you to the subway stations and snap images of the maps. One person in this list, that I can name, generously turned in a magnificent number of stations for Manhattan: David Alpert! David is exceptionally active in local and national progressive politics. David gets a lot of ordinary people active in their communities, as he is one of the founders of Cosmopolity, a nation wide network of progressives. onNYTurf is indebted to his contribution!
There is only on thing about this update that makes me a little sad, and that is, now we have to kiss our rats good bye!

Hmmm... or do we?

There Are Some Bugs, Sort of Speak
Given the size of this upgrade there are definitely some minor mistakes. In some cases a station dot may be off center of the line. In other cases the info window hot spot is not lined up with the station dot. Also, here and there a line might have changed to a neighboring color, like a red line might appear orange in a tile. Etc. I have set up a new feedback page strictly for resolving these issues. Please please please report any off looking things you see. There are some instructions for reporting problems on the page. Now lets get to some credits for this update!
A great deal of gratitude is owed to Jared Schneidman! Jared is one of the finest technical illustrators around. He is widely published and I have had the pleasure working with him on numerous occasions. Jared volunteered to draw ALL the Manhattan stations you see now, every one of them! Did I mention this update includes all of Manhattan? You can see more of his work at jsdinfographics.com. Simply put, this release would have taken months longer if not for Jared's exceptional donation of time!A great deal of gratitude is also owed to several people who I only know by their email addresses and sometimes a first name. As soon as
This may be too little, too late, but...
Thanks, these stations are included
More about Alpert
One question: where do the landmark identifiers come from? For ex., the subway map shows "CUNY Grad School & Univ Ctr" where Google Maps shows the NY Public Library.
Thats the map provider
Yeah, that is one seriously curious screw up. Dave Alpert, who also happens to work at Google submitted a bug report on that. So hopefully that will get passed along to the map provider.
Sweet!
incredible..
