onNYTurf note: I have completely lost track of how many times someone in city hall or city council has promised more police oversight. After the Sean Bell shooting an entire "Tri-level Task Force" of city, state, and federal representatives was created to investigate abuses of police power and do something about it. But that effort all but evaporated. So here we are, again.
I will choose to put this at the feet of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and more over City Councilors. I know Bloomberg isn't going to do anything about changing the NYPD. Just like he won't do anything about changing crane safety at building sites. Bloomberg is not a person who challenges central power structures, he likes them. Quinn on the other hand holds the opposition role. She's promised more oversight of the NYPD at least twice, once when she signed off the 50 person parade permit rules, and once after Sean Bell was shot. Her office won't even force the NYPD to release the stop and frisk data that the NYCLU has been suing for for more than a year. And her City Council members have no real spine either. Lifting a finger was never so hard.
So unless the groups and City Council members hosting this press conference want to get far more aggressive in holding the leadership of the city accountable, this is going nowhere. It's simply not enough to show up to One Police Plaza on Wednesday morning and get 20 seconds of time on NY1.
