Sunday Photographers Will Protest MTA Police Harassment and First Amendment Abuse in Brooklyn
Area photographers will protest the recent harassment of another photographer by MTA Police this Sunday at 3pm. An out of town photographer alleges an MTA Police Officer attempted to confiscate her camera as she was shooting video around the development area, and then repeatedly reminded her the project was definitely going to happen. The officer allegedly also asked if she was part of a anti-AY organization.
Photographers and videographers and anyone else who gets pissed off about this kind of bs will meet Sunday February 10th at 3pm at the Brooklyn Bears Community Garden, Pacific Street and Flatbush Avenue, entrance on Pacific. If there's *heavy* rain or snow, we'll change the meeting place to Freddy's Bar, 485 Dean St, corner of Sixth Avenue.
Here is a statement about what the rally will entail:
This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened. Atlantic Yards Report has a full recounting of the offending incident, including the juice details of the "security check":
What is there to say? Anyone at City Council feel like this is a problem? Hello? Anyone there?

A "photographers' rights free expression mobilization" responding to the harassment of video artist/teacher Katherin McInnis by an MTA police officer last Sunday, February 3rd on public property within the Atlantic Yards footprint. We will discuss photographers' rights and the Atlantic Yards situation, then walk and photograph within the footprint. Depending on circumstances, we may have the opportunity to engage in respectful information exchange with MTA police and/or private security personnel. End point: Freddy's Bar and Backroom, 485 Dean Street, corner of Sixth Avenue.

McInnis, who was staying with friends in the neighborhood, said she’d become curious after seeing so many signs in windows of homes and businesses opposing Atlantic Yards. After downloading a map, she took her “small consumer video camera” to the site.
She said that she’d been shooting for about ten minutes, while listening to an iPod, when the police officer approached her. He told her to turn off the camera and then asked her to turn it over. She said she didn’t think she was required to do so. He told her she wasn’t being cooperative. He asked for ID, and she provided her California driver’s license as well as her Brooklyn address.
He then ran a "security check" and asked McInnis if she’d ever been arrested, detained, or questioned--questions that seem more directed toward terrorism (a lingering issue for the Atlantic Yards project) than political opposition.
